The BBC and Tim Berner's Lee

Here's some of the worst subbing I've seen on the BBC News website for quite a while:



The first par shown needs to be broken up - it took me three reads to get the sense of it. Then there's the apostrophe in Tim Berners Lee's name. And of course the stray 'his' in the third par.

The rest of the article is little better - particularly this short par:

Despite this, people like former US Vice-President Al Gore is an online optimist.

To be honest, I'm not shocked or offended at all - it's just nice to be reminded that nobody's perfect.

In which JD is denied escort services

As subs, Apus and I sometimes need access to websites that are blocked by our employer's "internet use policy".

This morning I was subbing a feature on companies that offer vehicle escort services for abnormal or heavy loads – you might have seen these on the motorway yourself. The feature made reference to the sector's internet forum, but access to this was denied to me on the grounds that "the category 'sex' is filtered".

Thinking about it, I can understand why our internet use policy considers www.abnormalescortforum to be inappropriate... and while I'm not sure what the other type of, ahem, 'abnormal escort', would be, I'm sure there's a market out there somewhere.

Most hated web words

An Engine Room regular has written in to tell us about a recent YouGov poll in which 2,000 web users voted for their most hated internet word or phrase. The top ten are:

1. Folksonomy (a user-generated classification system)
2. Blogosphere
3. Blog
4. Netiquette
5. Blook (a book based on a blog)
6. Webinar
7. Vlog (a video log)
8. Social networking
9. Cookie
10. Wiki / podcast / avatar / user-generated content

Not bad that only one of them has been an Engine Room 'word of the day'! Any other hated web words out there?
