Julie Walters: good message, bad timing

That fine thesp Julie Walters is featuring in a public safety TV ad (pictured below) reminding viewers to check their household smoke alarms. The message is direct: don't brew up during this ad break, check your smoke alarm instead... do it now or put your loved ones' lives at risk.

But should this ad be broadcast at 1am? Sometimes it's not what you say, it's when you say it.

Well, unless that's the ONLY time it's being broadcast, I think that's fine. Some people watch tv that late - you were, right? :-)

I don't know whether advertising slots for public safety ads have to be paid for – if so, I imagine that a 1am slot is considerably cheaper than a primetime one...

Surely this is also lost on those people that have already got up to put the kettle on, use the toilet or whatever else people choose to do during the adverts.

Hey ridger, for pensioners like me 1am is mid afternoon. But being conditioned to obey female voices I did as told and pressed the test button on the smoke alarm. Mrs Apus confirms that it's working fine and the bruises are fading.
