Flickr group: 'Sub editors untie!'

I've been using Flickr for a while now to store The Engine Room's photos, and I've just created my own Flickr group, 'Sub editors untie!', for people to share any photos that might be of interest to sub editors, copy editors, proofreaders and other editorial staff (as well as language fans of all professions).

I suppose that means the type of thing I blog about: headlines, interesting points of language use, typography, editing mistakes. But I don't want to be too prescriptive.

If you are a Flickr user, please consider joining this group and adding a few photos to it. I might feature some of them on this blog.

And in case you were wondering: the name of the group is 'Sub editors untie!' rather than 'Sub editors, untie!' because it's as much a statement as it is an instruction.

The Engine Room, eLearning and the apostrophe

Just a quick one today. One of the photos from The Engine Room's Flickr account has just been used (with permission) in an "eLearning module on the apostrophe".

The module is actually quite fun, if you like answering multiple-choice questions on apostrophe use. OK, maybe not for everyone but I think it's snazzy.

To see it, go to www.writing-kit.com and click on 'Apostrophe Review'. The Engine Room's photo is on slide number 15 (and originally featured on this post).

I feel strangely proud, seeing as I took the snap with my cameraphone and I'm certainly no photographer.

Photo special: Paine Funerals

OK, a bonus photo seeing as it's a Saturday and I'm assuming that I'll be in a good mood after my holiday:

Well, it made me laugh. Kind of suggests that the people they're disposing of aren't quite dead yet.

Back to the (slightly more) serious stuff next week.

Update 21/07: I meant to say that I took this photo in North London - Crouch End or Hornsey, I think.

Invacuation photos, beverisation and so on

Just a little update to say: finally got those photos of the 'invacuation' sign up. Thanks again, Gareth.

While I'm here, I'd like to share the following Times Online letters on new words. Andrew Rogers sent me the links ages ago and said at the time: "I'm torn between 'beverisation' and 'underelevatorisation' for me words of the month."

Thanks, Andrew - I personally like 'groundfeed'.
