Flickr group: 'Sub editors untie!'

I've been using Flickr for a while now to store The Engine Room's photos, and I've just created my own Flickr group, 'Sub editors untie!', for people to share any photos that might be of interest to sub editors, copy editors, proofreaders and other editorial staff (as well as language fans of all professions).

I suppose that means the type of thing I blog about: headlines, interesting points of language use, typography, editing mistakes. But I don't want to be too prescriptive.

If you are a Flickr user, please consider joining this group and adding a few photos to it. I might feature some of them on this blog.

And in case you were wondering: the name of the group is 'Sub editors untie!' rather than 'Sub editors, untie!' because it's as much a statement as it is an instruction.

Can I just say I'm very glad that I know "sub edit" means "copy edit"? Watching Quatermass II, and the reporter just called in the story: "Put me through to night desk... Now listen, I've got a story here, get it, every word - don't ask questions, just get it! For the past year, this country, and probably others, has been under the influence of... Look, Frank, you'll have to sub this to make it sound right but, under the influence of something from outside the earth."

Without knowing that, I wouldn't have understood what he meant.

Your group name reminds me of a horrible error made by a PR company I worked for a long time ago. The PR company put together a proposal to do work for a company called "United International" and the front cover of the proposal read "Untied International." Needless to say, they did not get the job.

P.S. I was not part of the group that put together this presentation (I was a lowly peon in a different department), it was only brought to my attention after the fact.

There's a clip of the relevant Quatermass movie scene at the Facebook group "Horny-handed subs of toil":
